Welcome letter 2016-17:
Welcome to Eleanor Joy Toll Middle School! At Toll, students become life-long and life-wide learners through a well-rounded educational experience. Our school provides a safe and secure campus environment that our diverse student body is proud to call home. Although students head to high school only two or three years after they arrive, the lessons learned at Toll will last them a lifetime.
The aim of the Common Core State Standards is to develop students who are critical thinkers, life-wide learners and college and career ready by the completion of their K-12 school experience. At Toll, we move towards these goals through rigorous academics enhanced by the teaming of our students across content areas in grade-level cores. We blend this with opportunities in athletics, the arts and career-based field trips, clubs and curriculum. We are also proud participants in GUSD’s FLAG program, which offers dual-immersion in several foreign languages.
This year, we are pleased to announce the return of a Drama program and a Visual and Performing Arts focus in all classrooms through the CREATES grant. We also are launching new robotics and coding programs that show a commitment to moving Toll full-STEAM-ahead on an academic experience that highlights science, technology, engineering, art and mathematics.
Additionally, Toll is moving towards a PBIS (positive behavior intervention support) model for student discipline and launching a student mindfulness/wellness center to support students’ social and emotional health.
These big changes are made possible through a joint effort with the Glendale Unified School District, the Glendale community, the Toll faculty and an amazing parent-support base. We encourage parents to get involved in our PTA and the Toll Foundation. Last year, Toll’s Annual Fund raised over $50,000. The goal for this school year is to match or exceed that figure. We’d love to see you on our campus. Toll hosts monthly C.H.A.T. (Coffee Hour at Toll) meetings where parents can learn more about the school. We also host social nights four times per year for students and families. There is a vital link between home and school communication and student success as we are partners in your child’s education. Information on how you can get involved is found on the home page of our school website. Learn more about our school by signing-up for our Sunday e-bulletin or by visiting our official Facebook page, Toll Middle School Family.
You can also sign-up to get important texts from me by texting 81010 and sending the message, “@tollm.” Finally, you can get a 140-character snapshot of the day at Toll by following me on Twitter at Dr. C. @TollTitans.
This year, our school theme is “Be the Change…” as we invite all Titans to celebrate both our uniqueness as individuals and our universal commonalities. Thank you for your support of all Titans, here is to a memorable 2016-2017 school year.
